A Food Processing Plant that makes specialty dough has an application in which a chain drive carries a “bowl” of dough up and down a rail into a mixer. The system elevates and lowers the “bowl” of dough almost 100 times each day. The chain drive, required lubrication and generated high noise levels.
The customer came to Bearing Headquarters seeking a solution. BHQ evaluation results show the noise level produced from the 100 pound roller chain drive system in the plant generates 85 decibels resulting in an unsafe working environment. The plant is spending an average of $3200.00 per year on maintaining their roller chain drive system.
Bearing Headquarters Solution:
The solutions experts at Bearing Headquarters teamed up with Gates Engineering to redesign the entire drive system using Gates Poly Chain.Gates Poly Chain provides all of the strength and power of the roller chain with a fraction of the noise levels. Energy consumption is also reducedby a minimum of 5% verses the roller chain. The poly chain will also extend the life of the drive gearbox and keyways along the drive train as there is less weight and load on these items as well.
By using the Gates Poly Chain in this application, the customer has seen many improvements. The initial cost of the Poly Chain Drive was $600.49, which is over $350.00 lower than the cost of the roller chain drive.
Adding in the maintenance required to maintain the roller chain system the total annual savings for the first year is roughly $3200.00 plus associated Energy Savings.
"The first start up of the elevator after conversion was so quiet I assumed something was wrong and hit the E-stop. The old chain drive generated 85 dB at 5ft. from the idler/tensioner, the poly chain drive is less than 10 dB from the same sensing point. The amount of energy required to get the weight of the original chain/sprocket arrangement moving versus the poly chain should extend the life of the drive gear box and keyways along the drive train."
