Cylinder redesign extends life by 3 times and saves $1,000 per unit

In a challenging environment where hydraulic cylinders faced constant failure due to overheating, contamination, and bent supply tubes, a customer using a clam shell bucket for loading and unloading dirty, hostile materials sought a solution. The OEM’s cylinders were inadequate, leading to frequent replacements and substantial downtime.

Through extensive research and development, our engineers devised a groundbreaking redesign. They introduced a wiper on the rod assembly to prevent contaminants from entering the oil, a wider piston assembly with a wear band for improved heat dissipation, and direct welded porting to eliminate exposed supply tubes.

The innovative design not only extended the cylinders’ lifespan but also significantly reduced maintenance costs. Compared to the OEM’s $4,500 price tag, the redesigned cylinders were only $3,500 each, saving the customer $1,000 per unit. Moreover, performance exceeded expectations, with cylinder repairs decreasing from monthly occurrences to quarterly or semi-annual events — a minimum 3x improvement in operational life.
